Creative Nature Walk & Art Workshop

We welcomed 30 children from Folkestone and Dover Madrasas for a creative nature walk and art workshop, led by artist, architect and long time collaborator Shahed Saleem.

The children explored the coastline on a scavenger hunt with ranger Lewis, gathering natural treasures – including kelp – to inspire new designs. Back in the Education Room, Shahed introduced how natural forms — from spiralling seashells to the flowing patterns of kelp — can serve as foundations for Islamic geometric design.

The children’s drawings and findings from the day will directly inform designs for future public artworks through our Intersections project including an exciting new commission with artist Farwa Moledina.

After creative activities and a lovely lunch, participants and workshop leaders performed prayers together, facing the sea and beneath the towering cliffs of Samphire Hoe’s extraordinary landscape, led by Imam Faruk.

A day full of exploration, learning, creativity and community.
